SINCE 2009

South of France on 35mm Film: Part II

I recently spent a week-long trip to the South of France with my Nikon and three rolls of Kodak Portra. The trip went from Marseille to Aix-En-Provence, to the small village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and the incredible nature of Gorges du Verdon.

Aix-en-Provence and Marseille are both over 2,000-year-old cities, bustling with shops, daily markets and architectural beauty left and right.

Painter Paul Cezanne was born in Aix-En-Provence and died there 67 years later. His famous paintings of the mountain Sainte-Victoire reside in museums from New York to Tokyo and Scotland. Photos below show a similar view of Sainte-Victoire and were taken just down the road from Cezanne's studio.

Stepping out of a 16th century hotel in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, led to short uphill walk past gardens, sunflowers ands cats to find the village filled with restaurants, shops and cafes.

Only a fifteen minute drive away is the absolutely incredible Gorges du Verdon, an enormous gorge filled with aquamarine water enjoyed by swimmers, kayaks and small boats. Pacific Northwesterners feel right at home with countless cyclists, camper vans and green nature on the surrounding roads.

I somehow managed to go thirty years in between visits to France and since then have been able to visit for a full week each year for the last three years, seeing my aunt and uncle, cousins and much of the South that leaves me in awe.
